Bio
Julia Spittel
Regardless of material, nature has always been Julia’s inspiration and has resulted in her “elegant organic” aesthetic, the hallmark of Earth Songs’ design. Her current work explores the warm glass medium using the self-developed technique she calls “glass marquetry.” By combining horizon line themes with the fluidity of the warm glass, Julia is able to capture the elegant flow of land, sky, trees, wind, water and fire in abstract scenes of great depth.
Julia has been a Visual Arts teacher with the York Region District School Board and a professional artisan since 1994. She has been making art all her life although her formal training comes from McMaster University, Ryerson University and the Emily Carr Institute of Design. Fascination with a variety of materials has lead Julia to explore techniques in jewellery design, hand thrown functional pottery, landscape photography and her latest love fused glass. Over her career as a professional artist, producing and exhibiting work across media boundaries has allowed Julia to cross-pollinate ideas between disciplines and bring original and unexpected approaches to each.
